kabul is journalist ben farmer. ben, the attack is being described as, quote, complex. can you walk us through what happened? >> well, it does seem to be complex and ambitious. it began at about 6:00 local time this morning, just after dawn. it began with two suicide car bomb attacks, attacking the gate of the airfield. the vehicles were packed with explosives and driven towards the gate and detonated. followed a wave of suicide attackers armed with assault rifles, some also wearing suicide vests. they started to attack the gate guards and guards on the walls. it was a two-hour fire fight. during that fire fight, helicopters took off from the airfield to join in the battle to fire down on the attackers. the fire fight took about two hours, at the end of which all the attackers were dead. we believe there were about nine in total, including those in the suicide car bombs. now, the coalition here has said none of the attackers managed to breach the walls and get inside the base. >> officials say these three afghan soldiers and two civilians were killed on this base, which is located in a

right here in newtown, connecticut. this fund will be used to help pay for the funerals of the victims, john. >>> police say they have found important evidence during their searches at the school and at the shooter's home. we also know now more about the actual shooting and what weapons were used in it. cnn national correspondent susan candiotti joins me now and, susan, what are we learning this morning? >> hi, john. well, we know one thing and that is that federal agents and other investigators who will be back out pounding out the streets today, chasing down leads, information they have that the suspected shooter in this case may have visited gun stores or gun ranges in the days before the attack. however, so far our sources tell us that those tips have not panned out. we also know that three additional guns have been found, according to our sources, at the home that the shooter shared with his mother. we're standing down the street from that house right now. we are told that one of those three weapons, which are all described to me as older model rifles, at least one of them have be

john berman in newtown, in the town square. john, bring us up to speed on what we've seen since yesterday evening. >> hey, ali, i'm standing in front of the st. rose of lima church where last night there was an emotional vigil with about 1,000 people here. residents poured in for the 26 victims of this tragic attack. of course, 20 children were killed, six adults, all at the elementary school. and we're learning more about the shooter, which we're going to get into in a moment. but first, let's focus right now on the victims and what happened at that school, and here in this community. the community gathered to say their prayers and give thanks for the survivors. they also said good-bye to the victims. all of them trying to come to grips with this horrible, horrible tragedy. >> people's children and brothers and sisters were taken from them. people's spouses, those teachers and administrators were taken from us. yet, we stand in a church, and many of us today in the coming days will rely upon that which we have been taught and that which we inherently believe that there is faith

. thanks so much for starting your morning with us. a deadly attack in afghanistan has left five people dead and at least 18 others wounded and the taliban is claiming responsibility. it happened here at a joint u.s. afghan base near the airfield. there are no reports yet of u.s. casualties. joining me by phone is journalist ben farmer. ben, this attack involves suicide bombs and gunmen. can you tell us exactly how things unfolded? >> yes, it seems to have been a very complex attack. it began soon after dawn around 6:00 here local time. it began with two suicide car bombs. these were vehicles packed with explosives, driven at the gates of the airfield base, and they detona detonated. soon after that, a wave of attackers with rifles and suicide vests stormed the gates. this prompted a two-hour gun battle. it was all over in about two hours. nato says none of the attackers, none of the militants managed to breach the defenses. all of them were killed. however, we have reports that four or five afghan security guards were killed and two civilians, two medical students who were on their way
